Maine was made for

Explorers

Whether you're arriving from nearby New England towns or journeying from farther afield, the road to Maine is a prelude to discovery. Many will pause in Portland, drawn by its vibrant culinary scene, be charmed by the picture-perfect coastal towns, or tread the well-loved paths of Acadia National Park.

But on the roads less travelled, you’ll feel the gradual unraveling of the modern world. Quaint towns give way to dense pine forests, wide-open skies, and the kind of untouched scenery that stirs something deep.

By the time you reach Rangeley you’re not just in a different part of Maine—you’re in a whole new state of mind. At home in the wilderness, where getting lost is part of the magic.

Fastest Route vs. Best Route

Now, We’re not going to tell you how to get to Rangeley. Your GPS can surely give you directions—And unless it’s a holiday weekend, it’s probably the fastest, most direct route. But after years of doing this, we’ve found a few routes we like better.

And an extra half hour, when it feels like part of the vacation, is often better than riding white-knuckled through 7 hours of stop-and-go traffic.

Again, your call, but we’d rather stop and smell the lupines.
